Chapter 5: Further adventures

Thord presides over the smoking of herring with the sons of his brothers Gunnar and Gustaf, 1953. From left to right are Cissi, wife of Gustaf’s son Ingvar; Ingvar; Sassa, wife of Gunnar’s son Karl; and Thord-Gray.

AN inventory of Thord’s further adventures between 1905 and 1913 includes his rescue in East Africa of a Masai youth from flogging. The boy repays his ‘debt’ by saving Thord from a charging lioness. In this chapter, Thord also hunts down insurgents in the Philippines as a member of the local police force; survives a flood while fighting rebels with the Foreign Legion in French Indo-China; comes under fire from a Turkish warship in the Mediterranean; and climbs the volcanic mountain of Papandayan on the island of Java.
